Yes. Great Aunt Gertie. You’re right. Trying for a baby is FUN!

“But by FUN do you mean…

having routine timed intercourse with your great nephew for months on end, and then elevating my legs to help his boys swim upstream; sticking a pink thermometer in my mouth each morning and then writing down my basal temperature on a form that I hide inside my desk drawer; examining the toilet paper obsessively; drinking raspberry leaf tea and other fertility concoctions because my mother told me to; going for acupuncture and sticking needles between my eyes and in my belly while an acupuncturist named Felicity tells me to relax. Yes, trying for a baby was definitely a great time. Just ask my husband when he had to provide a sperm analysis test on 9 different occasions and then openly chat about it with a strange doctor about his results; and it was also a blast during my HSG fertility test; and when we had to talk to fertility intern, Camille, about our sex life. I would also say it was good times during all those early morning transvaginal wand appointments; and I think we equally had a blast when IUI #1 – #25 failed and I sobbed on the bathroom toilet and then again, during my friend’s baby shower. It was quite enjoyable when I had to miss meetings at work because I was having eggs removed from my uterus; when all my friends got pregnant before me and I particularly had fun gaining excess weight from those super fun fertility drugs.”

But yes, Aunt Gertie, you are completely right. Trying for a baby is fun but sometimes it’s also a bit…what’s the word…..trying.

(The Circle & Bloom fertility discount is still available until Jan 31! See here for more details)

As always, you hit the nail on the head! I want to forward this to my mother!

  2. says:

Oh don’t we all relate to this!! So true- there are a few people I would like to forward this to!

  3. says:

    Amen!

  4. Marci says:

One of my friends made a pregnancy announcement with “After 11 fun months of trying…” I’d been trying for 5 years at that point and it had pretty much stopped being fun. BLOCKED!

  5. Christina says:

I just had my doc. tell me “how hard it is to raise kids and to be happy that I don’t have them. That I should be having fun with my life right now, and enjoying sex with my husband because having kids changes everything and to not try and rush, because i’m so young I’ll get pregnant eventually”…Really doc?! I’ve been trying for a year and a half and just because im 25 doesnt mean that I got a lot of years ahead of me! Yeah you may be right that kids change everything in your life, but im not one of those people that would regret it and look back hoping that it never happened. Being infertile and trying to have a baby changes a lot in your life too! Screw you @ssh0le!!

  6. Maya says:

HAHA! Yes, trying for a baby WAS fun. For us, please add getting up at 3 in the morning to drive 3 hours for 7 o’clock appointments.

God, I needed a laugh. Thanks.

  7. Maya says:

At Christina- I know how you feel. I was 21 when we started trying. I had person after person tell me to “just relax and have fun. You’re young.” By the time I hit 25 and people were STILL telling me that I was like “if one more person tells me to just have fun and enjoy not having kids” I was gonna kill someone!!

Some people just need a mute button!

    Good luck girl!

  8. says:

Christina and Maya I feel the same. It’s like when I say I wish I have miscarried 3 times people say “you have plenty of time to have kids” just because I’m 23. Yeah. Time sure is the issue here!!!

  9. sar says:

Amen……i’m just trying to ovulate :O Your writing/blog has been SO helpful–thanks for being there.

  10. Rachel says:

    too true!!

Yes ‘trying’ is definately the word at the moment, after yet another round of ’super-fun’ fertility drugs….

  11. says:

…giving yourself daily shots is also quite a joy. I start tomorrow! (I am actually excited but, not so much for the thrill of trying)

  12. Rachelle says:

OH YES! How about having your surgery where they drill holes into your ovaries (tomorrow) doesn’t that sound like FUN….and on top of it all my husband is deployed so I have to wait 10 months to find out if it worked! In the mean time, acupuncture, medications that make me sick, and loads and loads of tests and seeing pregnant people all around me (in the military community…I swear everyone is pregnant or has a baby)! But yes…trying is a lot of fun! Thank you for always putting into words what I can not say! I enjoy your posts soo much!!

FUN?? Yes I LOVE living on 3 hours of sleep a nite to drive to the RE office for bloodwork and to be prodded by the dildo cam. Oh and the FUN of having to say NO to numerous social events, and even work events so I can run home and take my fertility meds. Oh and the migraines, and mood swings. Thats the real fun! : )
    Great blog!

  14. says:

The hidden BBT chart in your desk drawer at work, LOL! Been there!!

  15. Han says:

It’s the hope that you can’t quite help feeling each month – (despite knowing that if it hasn’t happened for 6 years why would it randomly happen now on it’s own) and then that crashing back to reality. That is not fun.

Or on the day that you get AF you hear news that your 22 year old single cousin who was pregnant to her druggy ex-boyfriend has had a second trimester abortion. Not. Awesome. : (

  16. Toni says:

Yes, it is indeed a jolly good time. In fact, it baffles my mind why everyone around me speeds through it in just one month. They should postpone the good times. The public injections are a blast.

  17. Sara says:

I love it when people ask me why I’m not drinking. It’s because I’m NOT an alcoholic and has nothing to do with being pregnant. Ugh!

  18. jdfan14 says:

oh yes very fun…espeically that HSG test. That was super fun! Not. He he he thanks for the laugh

  19. Annabelle says:

Love your blog, it’s always so amusing and hits so close to home! I gave you an award on my blog, also got the book today!!

  20. I really enjoy your blog. I'm not an infertile but a fertile whose husband decided to get the dreaded vas (for me anyway) you all here may hate me and say I debt belong. But your blog helps me. My children are older and I can't have anymore. Currently dea says:

Any advice? I have an 8 year old child and have desperately wanted another baby, but that hasn’t happened. I know some think well you have…but it still hurts. My question is. How do you get through a family baby shower? My husbands cousin just announced and it’d be awkward and rude I think not to go. Yes, I’m already nervous about the baby shower. We are not real close and at least 10 to 12 years apart. (I’m 39) nobody knows except my husband about how I feel. Any tips on how you ladies do it if it can’t be avoided? (and shouldnt?) I don’t want to make a fool of myself and am genuinely happy for her and wouldn’t want to in any way spoil this special time in her life. Thanks for any helps.

    I LOVE your blog!

  26. says:

Ugh my mom thinks that since we’re infertile that opens the door for her to ask me about my sex life! NO THANKS! She always says “well I’m sure [insert my husband's name] doesn’t mind all of this ‘trying’”! Yeah you’re right mom, he loves to talk about my cycle and deal with my mood swings!!! SUPER FUN! :P

  27. Lisa says:

God I needed a laugh. This was the first time I could laugh at my infertility. I want to frame this and put it on my desk so that I can read it when im on the verge of my (sometimes daily) breakdown!
